A. Be of the same mind with one another to maintain the fellowship of the Spirit in affection and compassion (Philippians 2:1-2).
Christians were all saved by Jesus. All Christians should be following Jesus in everything they do. Therefore, Christians should all be moving in the same direction, that being sanctification. All Christians should seek their own sanctification and the sanctification of others, doing good and serving the Lord. Therefore, one can have so much compassion and encouragement toward other people when they know they are all on the same journey to love the Lord with their lives, the best they can.
B. Regard one another as more important than yourself, not dealing with anyone out of selfishness or empty conceit (Philippians 2:3).
Jesus served His disciples, even though He was better and more deserving of glory than any Christian. He gave, freely, salvation to all those who trust in Him, apart from any deserving qualities. This means the whole Christian life is a gift, not deserved. And, where glory was deserved, in the case of Jesus, it was laid down. Unless a Christian is prepared to say they have earned their salvation or are more deserving of glory than Jesus, all Christians must be humble and serving others.
C. Bear with one another in love since you have been chosen by God (Colossians 3:12-13).
As mentioned before, it is the Lord who has chosen all Christians by His own will, through His own power. Nothing is owed to the Christian. Therefore, when Christians feel they have been wronged and owe something from other people, they must remember the enormous debt they owed the Lord before He paid it for them. Christians must love because Jesus first loved us.
D. Forgive one another just as the Lord forgave you (Colossians 3:13).
The same as the previous point, Christians must forgive because Jesus has first forgiven us. Any reason Christians have for not wanting to forgive is made mute because Christians had a far greater debt to the Father, which was paid in full by Jesus. Man had no way to pay the debt, but Jesus still chose to pay it. Therefore, Christians have no right to demand payment from anyone else.
E. With all wisdom teach and admonish one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God (Colossians 3:16).
Spiritual encouragement is a part of growing the body. If all people are on the same spiritual walk toward sanctification in Jesus, they should be seeking to help eachother through that walk. Christians must love eachother enough to help them be more like Christ, thus growing the entire community of believers. The way to do this, here, is through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, which give spiritual encouragement to Christians.
