How Can Christians Use Secular Theories in Education?

The wisdom of the world can only be imparted into a Christian worldivew if it allows for Christian presuppositions. Understanding something apart from a biblical worldview simply will not do. If a Christian is going to benefit from understanding secular learning theories, or benefit from any secular theory, the theory must allow for the Christian presuppositions.

For example, the mainstream idea in biology is that all life evolved from a single-celled organism. This does not explicitly violate the Christian worldview, as long as one views Genesis 1 as a unique type of literature, and not as literal history. Therefore, a Christian can believe that all life came from a single cell, and also believe that it is by God’s sovereign will and power that He brought that to pass, for His purposes.

However, there is another part of the mainstream idea in biology about life, which is that this process occurred without divine intervention, sovereignty, power, or design. This is incoherent with a biblical worldview, which claims that God has done these things for His design.

Christians are able to benefit from secular theories as long as they do not necessitate a non-biblical worldview. If a secular theory or idea needs the foundation of atheism, then it can not be accepted by Christians. If the theorist is an atheist but the theory does not necessitate an atheistic foundation, then a Christian can view it and understand it in light of a biblical worldview, and gain from the research and theory.
